Conclusion

I have learnt many things thoughout the exhibition. I can't believe it's gonna be in 3 more days! These are the few things I have learnt thoughout the exhibition.

• Near factories, people could feel vibrations, smoke, and even floods due to the factory working.


• Farts contain Carbon Dixoide!


• Trees absorbs Carbon Dioxide and releases out Oxygen for us to breathe in a process called photosynthesis.


• Cars DO NOT always releases Carbon Dioxide. Infact, the produce Carbon Monoxide.


• Indonesia is the third biggest carbon dioxide emmiter in the world after China and USA.


• Carbon DIoxide DO affect where people live.


• People who live near factories are really concerned and they protested for a few times until the factory will listen.

Our Action

We are going to give out FREE small trees in small pots to the people in exhibition for them to plant in their houses. These trees would have a sticker on the pot that says: I am saving the world...coz I have a tree in my backyard but we have to check it with Ibu Maytha ;-)... We are planing to buy 100 trees on the people who sell trees near the road. We are going to buy just small trees that are cheap but really affects the environment. We thought this is a good and a fun idea because the people could have fun planting trees while they save their local environment.

The problems that we are facing is the budget but we hope our parents would understand that we need money to buy trees and it is important. We estimated that we need to spend about 200.000. (if anyone in our school wants to give donations, we accept it!) We are going to do this on the weekends and bring it to the exhibition. Ofcourse, during the weekend, we have to water it.

Goodyear

This is the picture of the Goodyear factory I took from google earth.

From the front of the factory it looks quite small but when I saw it in google eart, It seemed quite big. If you want to find it in google earth, you can go to Bogor and find Stadium Padjajaran. The factory is accross the stadium. (you can see there is a field near the factory.

Experiment

Regarding to our main key concept, perspective and causation, we went to visit the factory in Bogor, 'Goodyear' and the living area around it. We have 2 seperate parts of the experiment which are:

1. Going to the factory itself and find out what is being processed and burnt in the factory to know the cause and the factory's perspective.


2. Going to the living area around it which we have done on 13/05/07. Here, we find out the people's perspective and how do they live with the distraction of the factory waste.

By this experiment, we can now what the factory wants and has to do and what the people around the factory has to say about what is the effect of it on them.

The results that we got from the people's perspective are different because we interviewed people from 5 different parts of the factory. The most effective interview was with Ibu Mirani, who lived the closest to the factory (only a gap of one house from her house to the factory). She said: "A few years ago, the walls shake if the factory's working, flood happen because of the wall that is built in the river near the factory, dust come in homes. But we have protest and they listened. They have lessen the quantity of dust, will open the wall when it will rain, and decrease the massive working. Now, no such thing as wall shaking or other things happen." This was really helpful because it gives us lots of information to the effect of the factory. We are planning to make an apointment with the factory next week (14-20 May) so we can know their perspective. Let's just hope they have all the information provided to anwer our question.

Indonesia, Economy or Carbon Dioxide?

This article tells about that Indonesia, which has rich forests, is being the third largest Carbon Dioxide producer in the world after U.S. and China. They are complaining that Indonesia focuses more to the economical growth of the country like poverty than to keep the environment. Because of this, Indonesia has a good enough reason to cut down trees.
They have decided this in a conference in Bangkok on Friday. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) said that with the technology today, we can solve the problem. They are very concerned if we don’t do anything about this, it could get to great measures. China and India are also connected to this, but it was shocking for Indonesia because it is a small country compared to India and China. Let’s just hope that our economical growth could be well organized as well as our Carbon Dioxide level.

My Second Inquiry

My second inquiry is “How human activities change the CO2 level”. Carbon Dioxide is well known as the ‘greenhouse gases. The greenhouse gas is produced by burning many sorts of forms. Human activities are the main producers of Carbon dioxide. They burn oil, coal, trees, trash, and everything else they can get their hands on. Oil, coal, gas, and fossil fuels contain carbon. When it is burnt (which we do often), we release them as carbon dioxide through smoke.
Another of men’s mischievous doings are deforestations. Deforestation is when you cut trees in order to make new farmlands or build places. They can also be cut down just to make paper and other items made from wood. Trees (1) have Carbon contain in them as they absorb it in a process called photosynthesis and (2) produce Carbon Dioxide when they are burnt. Trees help us but we’re destroying them. One of the worst cases of deforestation is when you have to do it again and again. When you cut down trees, you provide farmland to make farms. But because the world is starting to get hotter, the land would dry up fast and allowing us to do it again. By this, we increase the level of Carbon Dioxide more and more.

Performance

Our group performance is a premiere and a band. In the premiere, we are going to show our mini movie that shows working factories in Jakarta and Bogor, burning trash, and also the tol road where cars pollute. The message that we want to give to the audience is how we humans contribute to the Carbon Dioxide level. We want the audience to realise that they can decrease the Carbon Dioxide level by not doing the activities shown very often. I think it wouldn't be boring for the audience because we give them the message through the real thing that happens in our encironment and through a movie. The scenes in the movie are from real factories around Bogor and Jakarta. We are also going to view the tol road, and the burning of trash in our school. After the premiere, we are going the theme song of the movie which is 'I just wanna live' by good Charlotte. We are practising this song with Pak Rinto. This performace will take about 5 to 7 minutes to do. The special items that we need is instruments for the band, and a projector & a screen for the movie. We hope by doing this performance we can deliver the message clearly.

Key Concepts

My group has choen 3 main key concepts for our Exhibition.
The first and the second key concepts are Perspective and Causation while the third one is connection.

Perspective
We chose perspective because we want to know whether people realise the affects of Co2 and we also want to know whether they care for Co2 or they don't.
Causation
My other key concept causation is chosen becuase we want to know the basic information of CO2. We want to know where does it come from, how is it produced, and what produces it. We are focusing on Human activities that causes CO2 like from factories, deforestation, and pollution.
Connection
We want to know about how does CO2 affect where we live. How human activities produce Co2, and what is the connection between modern technology that is developed by humans produce Co2.

We(my group) hope that with these three key concepts we might be able to know more about Carbon Dioxide.

How Co2 affect where we live (1st eLearning Hw)

The effect of Carbon Dioxide (Co2) to our home varies. The main effect of Carbon Dioxide would probably be Global warming. Global Warming is produces is called the Greenhouse affect. The greenhouse affects only works if there is a greenhouse gas. This gas is Carbon Dioxide. One of the Carbon Dioxide producers are human themselves. They burn oil, gas and coal for car fuel, factory products, and others. Now the greenhouse gas helping us to keep us warm when it is in a secured level. But now, people have produced more and more gases that allow the earth to heat up in an unsecured level. The heat could melt the ice in the North and South Pole. The melted ice become water and adds itself to the sea water. There would be massive water level rising. The water levels rising produce floods and landslides that could affect where we live. Mosquitoes that carry malaria and dengue fever that are attracted to the floods could give people several diseases causing them to move from where they live. Especially that we are living in Indonesia where there are lots of mosquitoes. People could also be affected by the increase of heat. Carbon dioxide is not toxic so it doesn't melt or destroys our houses. But if it is inhaled too much, we could die.

Welcome to my blogspot! Relating to my UOI (Unit Of Inquiry) lessons at school, this blog is where I post the information, data, and others related to my group topic, Carbon Dioxide. My Exhibition

In the Grade 6 exhibition, we are learning about the local environment around us. Our theme for this is Sharing the Planet. Our title is It's our world, we're responsible for it. The central idea for this UOI is We are responsible for determining causes of changes in our natural environment. The inquiry into is the information that we want to know. It is usually made up by the teachers, but specially for this UOI exhibition, we decided our own inquiry into which are:

• How Co2 affects where we live
• How human activities changes the CO2 level.

By the way, my group, the Co2 gladiators (coming from the insiring members) have decided to focus on Co2 beecause we think it plays a very important role in air pollution which is now a very important issue. Our group slogan is 'I just wanna live' which sybolizes that we want to fight Co2 in order to stay alive.
